Algae problem...

mexican turbos are aquacultured in the baha of ca. not far from me actually. when they go..the whole house knows.

green knuckle I guess its called. For the rest I havent bought any in a year. haven't lost any either. 6 currently. Big herb did pass away a few months go. but he was more than 4. his last shell was almost 2"
maybe you got too many crabs not enough food.

yea I havent lost any blue legs for a year.
never lost a chonch either(except a crash). from what I understand hermits are intertidal so can go with a shorter acclimation. chonchs are deeper water so I give them a long more careful acclimation.
but yea lfs to lfs matters on ALL livestock.

why are so many of your snails and hermits dying?

Well two of my snails were killed by my hermit because apparently the shells I have littered on my sand bed aren't good enough (He killed two because I took the first one out not realizing they killed him for the shell). And then only one hermit passed away naturally I guess.

If it is really slimy and the snails and the tangs die due to eating them its unfortunately dino flagellate(i hope not).

Though i do not see alot of tiny boobles in it.

WOW! Looking back at those pictures...my tank was bad! Didn't know it looked so much better now. I guess I have you guys to thank...Oh and by the way that hermit in my avatar yea that s the evil one...

Anyways I took out the second power head because I added some new coral and it was simply too much flow in my small 15 gallon... I had a 240 gph and 500 gph running took out the 500 gph and algae started to grow, tried using only the 500 gph too much flow. (Keep in mind I have a aqueon 30 HOB running)

My parameters are all good...

Ammonia- 0 ppm

pH- 8.2

Nitrites- 0 ppm

Nitrates- 0 ppm

Alkalinity- 11 dKH

Calcium- 480 ppm

Phosphate- 0 ppm

Magnesium - 1350 ppm

What I have noticed... (haven't given it much time to grow so observations are early stages)

Light brown on sand bed ONLY this doesn't grow on the rocks. Gone at night back in the day.

Some spots turn reddish (I have noticed one spot so far)

This red spot will get little strings off of the sand grain
These stringy parts aren't long fairly small
I have noticed other stringy parts on the sandbed (these parts seem to be a little red/brownish)\

Not sure if it is gone during night

Its seems to growing in high flow areas as well as dead

My guess...

Cyano or red slime what do you guys think??

Glad its going well. Im guessing that what your doing is working. Its likely its still leftovers from the original problem causing the cyano etc. and Po binds to rock and sand to it takes time to pull it out.
Im rehabbing a 30g for similar issues. It flares goes away etc but keeps getting better.
I personally don buy the flow thing too much. cyano do what it want. And sometimes the flow is actually directing organics right to that spot where it falls and feeds the cyanos. My jbj always had cyano start right in front as the 2 return inlets are in back aimed at the glass and it was a hurricane there.
I forget if we talked about an hob fuge. I have had them on every small tank and loved it. Visual noticeable difference. Heres the cheap one.

also adds air for a more stable PH esp for small tanks.
This was key to my rehab. that and increased light levels. No Gfo. elbow grease and plants and animals for po reduction.

Thanks! How does this HOB fuge thing work? And I am not sure if it's cyano...also it came back because I took away the other powerless also I started to feed my corals...that might be another reason why this NEW algae is coming in. Here are some pics. So what is it ??? [

haha. its abit o cyano. it works just like a fuge. water goes in through the chato and back to the tank. google hob fuge and youll see the big ones too. Im just cheap.
just like a fuge its a good place for pods to hide and breed. like little janitors.

extra food extra filters. and its ok to vaccume the sand bed. esp in small tanks. they get yucky. if its been a while do it in stages.

How is the tank looking today? What ever happened with the cyano?
