Algae problem

I have a royal urchin. I was wondering if I can put him in the back of my filtration to clean all the stringy algae

Yes as long as there is room and no chance of hit climbing on the heater. Otherwise just unplug the pump, scrape it off, and then siphon it out

Instead of sentencing the innocent urchin to the dungeon, I would clean out the algae as best you can and devise a simple cover for the filter area to block the incoming light to reduce the amount of algae that can grow there. A simple opaque plastic cover should do the trick.
