Algae Scrubber - overflow fed or pump fed?

I currently run an overflow fed algae scrubber which is mice because I don’t have to worry about a pump, however I do have to worry about stopping flow to clean. What is your preference?

I feed mine from the overflow (always take advantage of gravity); though I do not have to stop the flow. Bad design maybe.
