I'm taking the dive into starting a reef tank. I had fish only tanks for 20 yrs and will be starting a 40 gallon breeder. My question is about algae control since that is a big topic with reef tanks. I have been looking into getting an Algae scrubber and contemplating between a Turbo Aquatic L2 Rev4 or Santa Monica Rain2 waterfall Algae Scrubber. My question to the community does anyone have any experience with either of the 2 or would a refugium with Chaetomorpha works best to control unwanted algae in the tank.

With any of the solutions lighting is critical to its success. You need lights in the grow spectrum 2700 K red and 6500 K blue seem to be best suited for this but full spectrum will work. I would however recommend you get the tank up and running and stable before adding a scrubber. You need to have Nitrates and Phosphates present in the tank first. Maybe add it when you see you are starting to see some green hair algae in the display tank growing on its own. I've researched ATS's quite a bit before deciding on seeing what kind of growth I get from a lit refugium first. I ultimately will not need to add an ATS to my system.
