I was away from my tank for three weeks in August. While I was gone there was a pretty bad cyano outbreak. I siphoned as much as I could out and did a bunch of water changes.

It really isn't that bad but is still growing a little on the sand bed. I assumed this was typical cyano behavior growing in the low flow areas. Loose red strings form across the sandbed. Especially underneath my MP10.

It was growing on my zoas and causing them not to open so I decided to get a little powerhead to create more flow under my MP10. The algae is still growing in the higher flow and causing the zoas to not open. Am I right in thinking that it is cyano?

Tough to say might be that the flow is a little too high. Almost looks like those are pooping or spitting out the zooxanthelli algae. Can you see if it's coming out from the zoas mouths? Hard to see in the pic.

How old is the tank?

It was worse when the flow was a little lower. I've never seen my coral spit out their zooxanthelli algae but I don't think it is that since its growing on the sandbed too. Tank is about four months old.

Hydrogen peroxide, zoas are super resistant to treatment with it so you can take the frag out of water, spot treat the algae(I will squirt H2O2 all over the zoas and no ill effect)

for anyone having the same issue. chemiclean 48 hour treatment followed by a 48 hour period with no lights seems to have worked.
