So I had a bout with cyan and used chemiclean.

now I have this weird algae and I’m hoping it’s not that dreaded lyngbya majuscula.

Any ideas? It comes all very easily, grown in tufts/mats, is fairly slimy feeling and isn’t your typical gha.

The chemiclean did bottom out my nitrates so they are currently at 0 with po4 at .03 - 04, so I’m thinking the lack of no3 is what’s causing the outbreak. Have some sodium nitrate arriving tomorrow.

Oh and it grows back very fast! I clean the back glass and overflows a few hours later it’s back again...

Let’s try getting some responses

The white on it is die off. That’s about as far as my experience goes. If your nutrients have bottomed out, that’s the best time to pull it out imo because it lessens it’s grip on the rock. Keep working at it. Disposable eyebrow brushes work great at it.

I am not familiar with Lyngbya.

Post on the algae forum and you will get help. There are people there that are amazing.

Sorry, but that algae doesn't look familiar to me. I looked up lyngbya majuscula, it being a cyano bacteria, I would think the chemi clean would kill it also though.

I'm not sure exactly what type of algae this is. Lyngbya from what I have found is a type of single cell cyanobacteria without branches. Is your algae branching or single strands? In the meantime, I would attempt to get it under control soon since this is growing so quickly. I'd scrub the rocks with a toothbrush and siphon out as much as possible. If it continues to grow in the same spots, then maybe do a trial where you remove the rock and scrub it with H2O2 and see if it returns in that particular area.
