Hiya, since I went fallow my tank started to devolve algae. We have now put fish back in and they are doing well but now looking for something to help clear this up.

Just looking into this and never relised you could test it. Any recommendations on a test kit ?

I recommend Nyos for nitrates and a Hanna Phosphate Checker for phosphates. IMO they’re the easiest ones to use and read results.

so my po4 is 0.25. Still waiting on my other test kit to come.

PO4 of .25 is high imo.

I’d also turn off the lights if you don’t have coral. That will clear it up. But you’ll need to figure out the source of PO4 and fix that or the problem will come right back when the lights go on.

I feel like an idiot ! I never realised but I don't the the bulb in my uv sterilizer has ever worked ! Hopefully this will help with the problem

I don’t know much about UV sterilizers but I’m not sure that’s the solution. Maybe #reefsquad can help.

A few questions:

What's your source water? Ro/do? Tap?

What's your photoperiod for your lights? In other words how long are they on for?

And of course how old is your tank?

Also how big is your tank.
Rabbitfish and blennies are good algae munchies, but might outgrow your tank.
Any windows nearby?
Those numbers will produce algae.
