I have a green bushy algae growing on my overflow. I rip it off but it grows back. Does anyone know what it is or if it good or bad? Should I keep it and let it grow? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Over flow needs cleaning bad!! Lol
I've scraped it totally clean before and it grows back. It looks like that cause I ripped most of it out and left a little to take the picture.

Sorry, all i saw was a wall of acropora....very nice.

Seriously tho, maybe the algae buildup is from a lot of debris collecting there. The more algae grows there the more debris that collects there to feed the algae growth.

I'd scrape it down with toothbrush or bristle type thingie, keep blasting it with turkey baster to keep debris clear and do not allow any algae to grow there at all.

Or it could be just a tiny little algae scrubber if you left it the way it was

Is it growing anywhere else in the tank, on the glass, powerheads or live rock? Are you running a protein skimmer?

i have green hair that actually looks more brown and is growing on the rocks....parameters are spot on, and tds is 0. running ai sols over the tank. i cannot seem to get rid of it....i use a toothbrush to mow it down a little, but it keeps growing back....using a protein skimmer and filter sock that i change out every three days. i also run gfo and carbon and use a uv sterilizer

Your phosphates have to be high from what i understand to grow algae. The algae is taking it in causing a false reading. Have you tried Nopox? I haven't yet myself but have heard great things about it.

Yes, I run a protien skimmer, rox carbon, phos guard and live rock in the sump. I run leds blues 10 hrs. whites 7 hours. This has been growing for quite a while now actually I think since I switched to leds not 100% sure though. Doesn't grow anywhere else in the tank except for the top of the overflow. I dose 60ml of 2 part everyday and 60ml of mg. 1x every 2 wks. My tank is sps dominate. I have lots of flow 2 @ 3/4" eductors fed by my return pump which is an OR6500 and 2 1600 gph pumps which alternate every 90 sec. not sure what other info I can give. My sg. is 1.026, cal is 480, alk 10 dkh and mg is 1400.

I agree with Pkunk35. also, if you have a removable overflow after scrubbing and scraping, i would scrub or soak it in vinagar for a bit then rinse with RO.

I can't remove it . I have a colony of red plant that covers the edges from one side to the other of the removable piece. I'll just keep removing the algae. I just wanted to know if it would benefit the tank in anyway.

Yes that is probably your best option then. Although you should look up nopox and see if that would be something you could try. I've heard it was really good stuff. I myself plan to get some to have on hand.

Even if it is "good" algae ( however I don't think so) it's in a bad place in your tank.
