Hi guys I am having a bit of an alge problem, including some diatoms. My tank has nitrates of 3 ppm and zero fosphates. I am running my light 8 hours a day. My tank is only 10 gallons, so my clean up crew has 5 hermit crabs, 2 turbo snails, and five nassarius snails. Do you have and idea why I am having the alge problem?Thank you guys for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

How old is your tank? Setup (bare bottom, sand, rock, pumps etc)?
What equipment are you running? Brand / type of lights? What settings?
PH, KH, MG, CA, salinity?
Also, pictures greatly help.

I'm using RO water. The tank is 1 year old. My calcium is 450, pH 8, kh 120, magnesium 1500, and my salinity is 1.026.

With a 10g tank, you can get ahead of algae by a removing rocks and scrubbing, rinsing in peroxide solution and doing 100% water change. Basically, take rocks out and scrub with a toothbrush or use a sharp knife for some algae. pour a solution of 50/50 peroxide and saltwater over them. put back in tank.

However before putting them back, make sure to scrub the tank walls, blow out the sand or scrub the bottom. Do water change, then put rock back. I do this on my 6g, 5g, 20g and even my 40g when I have neglected it too long.

The bacteria is in the rock, not the water. I do them all the time. It is standard practice with pico tanks. As long as you do not soak your live rock in freshwater or keep out of tank for hours, it will maintain the bacteria and no cycle occurs.

When doing my 40g, my rock has been out of water for over 30minutes without issue. If you are going to be longer, drain the water from tank into another bin and cover your rock. Scrub in a separate container and rinse with clean saltwater. Does that make sense? Sometimes I do not type as fast as my brain thinks. :)

Plus just finished a pasta party for soccer team of boys ages 15 and 16. I am tired. :)

What brand test kits are you using and are they expired? To be sure your phosphates are really zero.

Ok, I will do that. That makes perfect sense. Thanks for the info. Also I am using Salifert test kits. Actually, they are expired as of May. I will pick up some new ones and see what they are reading.
