I have been wondering the same thing. I think I have decided to buy one just for simplicity of a proven design.

They are pretty easy to build if you have a little DIY skills and acrylic cement.

I built mine, including pump, and lights, I think it cost me like $80.

Ya the more I look the more I figure I can save $$. Pricey for what they are. Any pictures of you your build?

Wow very nice! What light did you use?

Just some hyrdoponic spot grow lights. Think they are 20watts a piece, and I have one on each side.

The issue with the DIY scrubber I built was the excess light. Algae did grow in the scrubber, but it also grew in the sump, the skimmer, on pumps and everything else.

Not an issue if you make an enclosed box. An encase the light within that box.

I agree you need to control light spill…
