Recently I had couple of discussions regarding the impact of frequent testing on the water salinity. The kh guardian In my case take back the tested water back to the aquarium since my KHG reagent is simply rodi with certain acidity so no harm.
Somone made a joke that consider this as small automatic water change...
light bulb!
That got me thinking, what if I hit 2 birds with one stone and use the khg as a testing and automatic water change.
Usually do not trust common home methods for AWC thay depend on peristaltic dosers (dos, stenner, ghl maxi..ect) because these methods depend on the accuracy of water volume pushed through the dosers. These dosers are calibrated to know how much water volume it push per minute, BUT, my problem is that by time these dosers tubing degrade and start deforming which means the ammount of water pushed per minute will vary without the doser knowing since the doser calculate rotation per minute to calculate the water.
Enter my KHG, khg pull specific ammount of water from the system to run the test. The ammount of water is not calculated based on the doser head rather based on float inside the test chamber.
Which means regardless of how old the doser head is, the ammount of water pulled every test is exactly the same every time to the ml...that's one of the great features of the khg in my openion and why it usefully have good accuracy even with time.
So here is what I did:
I put a salt water reservoir, and had one of my ghl dosers in there. I calculate exactly how much water the khg will pull daily(this will vary based on how many times I test a day). Then i programmed my ghl doser to dose salt water from the reservoir back in to my system as much as the daily water pulled out by the khg.
It works...I now do small AWC with every time I test alk. I even can control how much water I change daily by adjusting how many times khg tsat daily ha ha.
i thought of sharing this with you all.
You can use any doser for for your salt water dosing..as long as you have a tester that depend on a float to pull water out for testing, I think this method is tiny bit more accurate than depending on peristaltic pumps for both water out and water in.
With this method your water out is precise, water in is as precise as your doser ofcourse but still will be 50% less risk compared to peristaltic on both ends.
Clearly this method is gimmick and make sense for someone who had khd, alktronic or khg.
Happy reefing...
