About two months ago, I had a "mini" tank crash. Alk was down to 6, CAL was 300. I went and about a doser. My system is 250 gallons. I dose 24 ml's of ALK and 30 ml's of CAL daily, over a 12 hour period. The problem now is my ALK is 12.6. Im not sure the safest way to lower it and how much I should be dosing.

Stopping dosing for 3-4 days and retesting would allow you to approximately calculate how much your tank consumes per day and set accordingly, or you could just half your dose and recheck again in three days then adjust accordingly.

So I should just stop dosing? Should I continue to dose the calcium? Would if effect my coral?

What is the calcium now?

Allowing the alk to decline by 2.8 dKH with no calcium dosing will allow calcium to drop by 20 ppm or less. :)

Just curiosity. What product are you dosing for Alk/Calcium?

Sort of...LOL

Well if you still need some explanations to better understand what is happening in your tank, just ask.
There is no harmin asking any question.
We all started out in this hobby with no experience and minimal knowledge. Reef forums and clubs like this are helpful to the new reef geeks and the old farts like me, we never stop learning so ask away :D

I really need help now. I have some problems I need answers on.

Here are my current parameters:
ALK- 9.8 - I stopped dosing two days ago. It was at 12.6
CAL: 450 - hasnt moved, I continued to dose it
MAG: 1600. I do not dose and it is up from 1500 from a week ago.

The second issue: I dose 8mls of NOPX daily. I am again starting to get the "white slime" algae that I did the last time I used it.
I also added a biopellet reactor a few weeks ago. Nitrates went down to 5, now they are back up at 20.
Phosphates: Between .04 and .08
I am also starting to get diatoms? Why would this be happening?

1.So my question is...How would my MAG keeping going up?
2. How much ALK should I dose daily to keep it where it is at?
3. Why would my nitrates keep going up with the biopellets?

Ok I have a couple questions that may help me understand your situation.
How long has your tank been set up ?
How many gallons is it ?
Bio load, how many fish ?
How many corals ?
What do you feed and how often ?

Two possibilities on the magnesium, first being an inaccurate test or reagents are expired. Second would be pertaining to what supplement you are using for calcium? As some has amounts of magnesium in them so you will be dosing mag with calcium. Most brands just have enough to help maintain magnesium not raise it unless you are dosing in mad amounts.
Did you dose a large amount of magnesium to get your levels to 1500 ppm?

What alkalinity supplement are you using ?
The amount needed to be maintained will depend on the amount lost or consumed daily. BRS has a good calculator to help you put the values in and what type of supplement used and will calculate how many grams of the supplement to add to some RoDi water to dose with.
Start lower than what is recommended and retest after an hour or so to make sure you are not over doing it.
Remember to NOT increase more than 1 dkh per day of alk. 1.4 dkh rise a day is the max but why push it to the limit, leave some room for error.

Your nitrates keep going up even with bio pellets, this leads me to again needing some answers from you about your tank.
Do you have a skimmer, is it rated for the size tank ? Type and size ?
Is the skimmer producing good skimmate daily ?
How often do you do water changes? How many gallons ?
How deep is your sand bed ?
@ how many pounds of live rock ?
How often do you chance the bio pellets ? They may leach nitrates back into the water when they are full or exhausted.
These plus the questions above would help make a better educated decision on what is going on in your reef.

Look forward to seeing the answers to questions a and helping you out !

My tank size is 250 gallons total. I do weekly 20% water changes. The ALK and CAL supplements I use are the B Ionic. My skimmer is a Bubble Magnus curve 9, rates for 500 gallons. I have about 20 Fish, the biggest is 8", one is 6", the rest are 4" and under. I am not loaded with coral, but there isn't "just a few" either. Mostly LPS, some SPS and shrooms and zoas.
