My alk is going down from 8.9 t0 8.1. Is this to much of a big difference to cause any problems for my sps? I never let it go under 8.1.

Is this happening from WC to WC in a week long or is this daily from lets say dosing 2 part to your next dose the next day?

no that is not a big jump if it were to go from 8.9 to 7.1 that would be a decent jump to worry about. I would look at your magnesium levels if you are that worried about it. but you are more then well in the range of ALK you should be in. I try to keep all three of my systems at 10dkh even, using brightwell 8.4.

I am not familiar with that method of dosing but either way that jump IMO is nothing to worry about. I guess it depends on what type of SPS weather or not it is going to have a bad effect I know some SPS do not like any change. but it is inevitable that you are going to have ALK swing's with water changes no matter how close you match the new water so I think you are ok. But there are plenty of SPS gods on here so hopefully they will chime in. Good luck

I would think that is a pretty hefty jump myself. You might not be killing things or causing RTN/STN but I can assure you if you keep it more stable things will color up alot. Your closing in on a 1DKH per day spike even the 2part solution says not to dose more then 1DKH change a day. One thing to think about is breaking your dosing up. Lets say you are dosing 90ML a day do 30 when you wake up before you go to work 30 when you get home and 30 before you go to bed. I bet that break up would help alot.

How are you having ALk swings from water changes? The only way I can think of a ALK swing from WC is if you keep your ALK at a different LVL the your Tank.

Thanks a million........ I'm going to work on distributing the alk more, through out the day.

Any time!

I use to take a old water bottal and pre set my solution in that water bottal for the week. (Seven different bottals with Cal/Alk/Mag solution then water to about 90% full) and poor them in like that. Little bit before work little bit mid day and little bit every time I walked past the tank.

I agree with this

I agree with others…..dose multiple times. I have a much small system than you…only 90 gallon DT….and I dose twice a day with alk and calc using BRS dosing pumps. With your volume, as stated, you might wish to look at dosing three times during the day.

Rich, also check with Sunny (not sure if he is on R2R)….he has a similar size system and doses two part as well (using BRS dosing pumps)….but I’m not sure if he does it all at once or at different times during the day.

Great advice and I wanted to add one more point. Are you dosing calcium in equal portions to the alk? One thing I always failed to understand previously; by increasing my alk or cal I would decrease the other, unless added in equal portions. Just like children on a seesaw; you need to keep the weight evenly distributed to keep those parameters in check.

A reefer friend of mine used an analogy a long tme ago regarding alk and ca. He said its like a bag of marbles with 100 marbles in it if the alk goes up the ca will go down and so on. The stabilizer is your mag which also has to stay in the good range or you will have a real tough time keeping your alk especially in the propper range. Using dosing pumps and spreading the dosings out is also best reducing the spikes in your levels.
