What can cause an alk swing? I've been on top of my parameters lately. They don't really fall very quickly. Maybe over the course of a few days my alk would drop by .1 or .2. However at my last test it dropped around .8 over 3 days. What can cause a variance? No new corals were added. Also had a sudden drop in nitrate over this time. Went from steady 15 or so down to 3.

This can happen if pH gets higher...especially when you are out on vacation, co2 inside your house drops causing pH to raise which in turns helps faster calcification and higher absorption of ALK.

Possible. I know there's a relation however I don't think the air in my house has changed. We have the windows open every day.

I have heard of tanks consuming massive amount of alkalinity during a certain period and then little the next.

Maybe the calcifying organisms are just growing faster now.
