Hi !

I just finished cycling my newly established 120 gallon a few weeks ago. Most of my parameters are in check. Except my Alkalinity is reading at 5 ( I even had 2 fish stores test it today.

A few questions I was hoping you could help me with please :

1) I bought this product : https://www.marinedepot.com/Two_Lit...Little_Fishies-TL60059-FIADAK-TL60059-vi.html

Is it any good ? How much can I add at one time if I am looking to raise my Alkalinity ASAP ?

I currently have a few frags and a damsel in my tank .

2) I also bought tests by Sera for Clacium and Alkalinity . Are they reliable / any good ?

https://www.sera.de/us/product/marine-aquarium/sera-calcium-test-ca/

Thank you !

I’m unfamiliar with those test kits or the 2 little fishies product.

I will say however to follow the instructions to raise your alkalinity and if you are truly at 5, go slowly, as in .5 per day max.

A sudden jump in alk will most likely shock your corals and cause damage or death to them.

Have you tested with your new test kit yet?

Not yet, but it’s the same one they used in the store .

You may also be able to keep alkalinity and all major elements at proper levels with weekly 10% water changes until you get substantial coral and coralline growth.

You want your alk above 6.5. And most people seem to keep it between 8 and 10. Low alk can be serious so it is good to keep on top of it. Increase it slowly.... no more than 1 dkh per day.

Most marine invertebrates like corals, snails and clams, make their hard parts from Calcium Carbonate. Calcium carbonate is made by taking Ca and ALK out of the sea water. If you have growing hard corals, you have to replace the Ca and ALK as it is consumed.

Two Little Fishes is an established brand. But it does not say exactly is in the product. I think that it will work. Just follow the directions.

For an alkalinity test kit, I would suggest Salifert, Red Sea Pro or Hanna.

This is a great explanation. Thank you so much !

Safest way to pull your Alk back in line is with frequent water changes.. I’ll do approximately 20% every other day if I’m trying to correct a parameter that’s that far out of line.
