What is everyone’s desired Alkalinity in reef tanks? I did my test today and mine was a bit high mine measured at 4.5meq/12.6dkh. What would the best way to lower it

What corals do you have? Mostly LPS or SPS?

SPS is where you really endanger the coral at 13dKH or higher. It burns their tissue right off their skeleton.

LPS is more forgiving.

A good overall dKH is highly debatable but the range is 7 ~ 10. Ppl with thousands if dollars in ACROS watch dKH like 2x a day and freak over a 1dKH swing

I personally like to keep parameters close to natural seawater levels. For alkalinity this is approximately 7 dKH. Alkalinity will decrease on it's own as organisms utilize it. How fast this happens depends on what type and how many corals (or other CO3 utilizing organisms) you have in your tank. Large water changes with low alk salt mix is another option. If you don't have SPS corals and if you are not seeing any negative impacts on other tank inhabitants, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You lower Alk by either reducing the amount dosed, or using a salt that has an Alk closer to where you want it to be.

When Alk is in the band 8-12dkh, I never found any noticeable difference at 8 or 12 in coral growth and color.

pick what’s easier for you.

I run 8.5dkh now.

Mostly LPS, I was using Red Sea coral salt and just switched to instant ocean reef crystals
