I’m in a battle with my alkalinity levels, my LFS tested my alk and they got 7.8 DKH I dosed it the amount to bring up to 8.4 I checked hours later and got 9.8 dkh, next day tested and got 9.2 dkh and that was the consistent dkh I got. Two days in a row I got 9.2 dkh. Wel today I brought in a sample of water to same lfs and they told me my dkh is 5.6 both test are Red Sea I dosed by hand. I was told time won’t have a huge impact on readings. I tested @4 pm. Lfs tested today @1. Is my test bad or is theirs.

I’ve always thought the time of day, lighting period does matter. I’ve been told to always test at the same time every day. Do you happen to have access to another test kit besides Red Sea? If so, I would try that. Personally, I use a Hanna checker for alk but have used Red Sea and Salifert.
Turns out the LFS seas testing low. They opened a brand new test kit and it matched what mine read. Odd though because my parameters are good and phosphates .03 and nitrates 10 ppm from what they said. I haven’t seen any growth.

Alk and ph have something to do with one another but I can’t remeber how that works at the moment lol this is why it’s best to test at the same time of day. I usually test a few hours after my light turns on
