Has anyone ever seen Alkalinity Rise even when dosers have been shut off? I shut my doser off last night and my Alk jumped .5dkh since. Whats causing this to happen?

Are you dosing into the sump??

What test kit did you use?

When did you test (You had to of tested twice after the doser went off to notice it go up)

So... Yes I dose into the sump. I tested last night and noticed my Alk at 9.2 roughly so I shut my doser off since I like my alk around 8.4. I tested this morning to find out if it had dropped any and if I needed to turn the pump back on and the results were almost 10. I use Red Sea test kits.

Another weird thing that's happening is that day before yesterday my alk was 8.4 or so, my dosing pump runs 8 times a day for 1 min on 130 gal system. So.. here's where the confusion sets in as in 24 hrs, I was only dosing 8.8ml of soda ash. And in order for my volume of water to raise .5dkh I have to dose almost 50ml?? Mind has been blown on this one.

I was thinking you tested to soon after the dosing and it didn't have time to equal your whole system. I would recommend what the guy said above me said test a few times make sure the vial is super clean and equal water I'm sure your testing right but try it

The alkalinity changes throughout the day because it is related to the ph.
Try testing the same time of day when you test.
I test once a month and adjust from there and adjust up or down a maximum of 10 ml per day.

pH does change through a day/night cycle due to production and consumption of CO2, but alkalinity does not do anything except decline in a normal reef tank (assuming no dosing). :)

I add, BRS 2 part. Cal and Alk. That is the only things I dose.

Unless the issue is it not being mixed in well before testing, then any result where it rises that much that fast without dosing is a testing error.

While there are some unusual things that may make alkalinity rise (topping off with tap water that has alkalinity, a lot of metabolism of vinegar that was acetate when you first measured, a lot of denitrification), almost never does one actually see a rise.

Alkalinity is almost always on a one way route downward after each dose of the supplement. :)
