Mr. Randy a guy at my lfs store swears that he has had results eliminating hair algae when he raises the alkalinity level. What do you think? If this is true what is a safe level to raise it?

Are you sure he said ALK and not Mag levels?
Well IME higher ALK has had no effect on HA.

I tried raising both during my battle with hair algae, didn't work.
I ended up freshwater soaking each rock until all the algae died, one rock at a time to prevent a swing in stability.
I haven't seen any hair algae since.:xd:
