All about sumps

I'm getting ready to build my first sump and need advice. It's a 20g long for a 40g breeder. I have an SC aquarium skimmer. How do I plan out everything? How do I figure out how high to make the glass dividers based on the water level the skimmer needs? I've only had an aio nano until now, so I need all the help I can get!
