All Blues ?

Been hearing a lot of talk about all blue led spectrum for sps and lps lately. Who uses it? Who's tried it? Post pics ?

I remember reading an article where somebody grew out frags under only blue led's and it worked, not sure where it was though.

Idk I keep hearing tons of people say its the new thing to not run any whites and you get great color and growth still. Can anyone confirm? I'd try it myself but I just took my frag tank down and I don't want to do it on my DT obviously. I understand that WWC also uses this?

i dont remember who said it, but i remember someone saying that they were growing SPS successfully under all blues.

I think I remember reading somewhere The Blue Glow uses only blue lights but I may be wrong. Hit them up and see what they say.

someone in my local club had the whites of his Chinese boxes go out on one side of his tank and everything seems to being doing better than the other side that still has the whites.

I've grown SPS Frags using only 450nm Royal Blue.

The results were the same as with MH lighting.

Just remember under the water the Blue Spectrum is dominant past 30 feet.

I'm still not sold on the whole "going all blue" movement either. I want to see some coral progression pictures. (sps, LPS, softies) Not after a month or so, I'm talking a years worth of growth or more. Long term affects. What kind of lights were you using, how big is the tank, what were your parameters etc. The whole nine yards so to say.

This was simply an experiment, no pics as this was years ago when LEDs first came out. You can find online information supporting this. One interesting thing is the Hiroshima Effect. The shadow of the Birds Nest frag did not have coralline algae growth.

Back in the late 80s before affordable MH and Yes LEDs I was at a LFS in Florida and they had an amazing setup using only 420nm VHO.

410-465nm does grow coral. Do the corals look best under only that spectrum is a personal preference.

There's a reason for this though IMO. Most vendors at frag swaps or even LFS are not in the business of keeping corals long term. It's all about that fast buck and if the "blue lights" happen to make the colors "pop" a little more than why not use them. Even at one of my LFS I notice a lot more people tend to venture into the fish room when the Kessil's are running more blue than white. Catching the customers eye is key.
