Hello I my corals are dying. first they started bleaching and now they are deteriorating. I am devastated. All the water parameters seemed to be good. I finally noticed that the heater was broken and stuck at 90 degrees. My tank has been like a sauna. I got another heater and I am hoping that the tank improves. Has this happended to anyone before? What is the correct temp that the tank should be. Whats left in the tank is some zoas, a few softies and a bubble coral and of course my fish, which seem to be unharmed.

Aww no!!!
Yea heater failure does happen.

77 78 is where you want to be.

Hope you can save it!

Keep looking at the ammonia from the die off. Bottled bacteria will help it

I know my poor tank looks awful. Okay great I will keep it between those temps. I hope so. I will do a test tonight. Thank you so much!

I have a question. My bubble tip anemone has shrink-ed significantly i believe it is also due to the heat of the water. Will it come back?
Yes it should. Probably gonna be mad for a while.
Be ready or some water changes. And keep an eye out for ammonia. Just from other stuff dying off.

A heater and separate controller is the best option to avoid something like this, definitely. But there are less expensive things you can do. Like get a decent quality stick on thermometer (the kind with a metal prong on the back that detects water temp through the glass). They're accurate enough for this. Put it somewhere easily viewed and make a habit of glancing at it every time you walk up to your aquarium. If you were to have a temperature problem again, you'll likely notice it and take action sooner.

i had glass heaters before, and I changed them every year to avoid the points in them sticking and staying on like yours did. I now switched to titanium heaters with external digital controls that I set at 80 as a secondary safety, the reef keeper elite does the actual controlling because it is more precise and I can set it to 1 tenth of a degree differential, so I set that at 78. also, I bought 2 smaller heaters that equaled the wattage I needed for my 150 gal, that way if one went nuts, and the secondary safety didn't catch it and also went nuts, and I didn't catch it, then it could only over heat a limited amount, also if it went out on the off side then the temperature would only go so low, either way, I would eventually catch it with minimal flux in temperature.

I may also suggest split the heater needs so that its a faster catch for you. I.E. If it was a 150watt heater get 2 75 watts set 1 to desired temp and 1 to a degree below. With this if one does stick on its less intense and it gives you more time to correct.

What type of heater did you replace it with? I would seriously consider a heater with no internal thermostat that uses a controller.

Best option.

With that product it comes with two plugs, I use one for the heater and one for a cooling fan that sits right above the aquairum. I set my heater to 25c. Thing is, these heaters can only heat up the water so if for any other reason your water gets too hot the only thing you can do is wait for it to cool down which can take hours! If you had a fan connected to that heater controller then it does both.

How is everything doing now? How is your anemone? Do you know how long it was stuck at 90°F for?
