Got a bit of weird one here, a week or so ago all 4 of my nassarius snails surfaced just to die. This struck me as odd because they usually only ever surface to feed, climb the glass like maniacs, and then fall back to the sand and burrow again. I only have 4 in my RS Reefer 425XL because I've been battling dinos for several months. I'm aware dinos are toxic, and I have lost some trochus, astrea and nerite snails. But they were gradual deaths, not all at once.
It was weird because one day I came to the tank and all 4 of them were on the sand, they looked frozen in time, upright, but their long snouts were retracted just sitting there motionless. I left them there for days hoping like my conch they would just spring back to life, but they never did. I've got a couple hermits and they didn't come to pick the corpses either. After 5 days I pulled them out... they were super dead.
From my research all signs pointed toward metal poisoning, so I had an IPC test done the results are here: https://www.triton-lab.de/en/showroom/icp-oes/104760
No heavy metals, and nothing of major concern. So I guess I'll have to chalk it up to dinos? But again, I've had these snails for years, they survived months of the dinos, and they're now actually receding. Also to raise my phos/nitrates I've been WAY overfeeding the tank meaty foods so there was plenty to eat. I could accept one or two dying at the same time, but for them all to just pop up and keel over, is just beyond bizarre. Before I replace them I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same experience or has any ideas?
