I'm in North Captiva collecting shells. Aside from the cheesy-mess., Is it a good idea to put shells in your tank?

You can, scrub em off in bleach before hand and your good to go.

As reefing madness said, just make sure they are cleaned. Sanibel/Captiva have fantastic beaches for shelling (the shell museum actually is on Sanibel).
