All new fish are dying! Need suggestions

Am I allowed to mention the name of the store I recently got info from? Don’t want to violate any rules here but there prices are great and they also ship. So some may be interested in checking out the store or even just the web page.
I don't think that will violate any rules. If they are helpful than it will be good info for people that live in your area.

This was the place I should have gone instead of my LFS. Very helpful, spotless tanks... willing to teach and not just sell. Recommended many things that they actually don’t sell but would be beneficial.. Prices are reasonable and their variety of saltwater growth is amazing..

55g is a foot thick and about 21" tall.

FWIW if you take 3/4's of the cubic feet and move the decimal to the right you get the gallons.

For instance 4 foot by 1.5 footb by 2 foot tank:

(4* (3/4)=3)x1.5*2=6*1.5=9. move decimal 90.

(magic hu? LOL)

(secret each cubic foot is ~7.5 gallons.)

Thanks a pretty good math trick!

My old boss told me "cubic inches/231" and somehow that stuck in my head.

So for a 55 gallon tank...

48" x 12" x 21"H = (48*12*21)/231 = 52 actual gallons

both are correct and the 231 is more precise and accurate.

Plus my math trick requires tanks in even feet to be an 'in the head' type calculation. So for a 4' tank you start with 3 feet times the height times the thickness and move the decimal.
for instance

4X2X1=3*2=6=60g
4X2X2=3*2*2=12=120

But kinda a neat club meeting trick anyway.

The break down is over, rock and sand gone.. Tank bleached. Now to build the better/bigger sump with UV and skimmer. And no copper.. lol 7F33AE67-B4E6-4BC3-8729-E7C9F842C1EA.jpeg ED2D2014-99A8-47A3-B51E-A2E179921ECC.jpeg

Something I learned is the LFS doesn't really care. They need to make money so will tell you what they need to tell you to make money. They may have good intentions behind their advice, but they are almost always in a grey area of "in perferct circumstances and with luck you could keep this fish."

Unfortunately you 100% have to know what you are doing when you walk into a store in this hobby. It's hard because you walk in with knowledge of fish x but they only fish y and you really like fish y. Take 10 mins to look it up on your phone and go from there. I'm telling you, this will reveal the LFS blowing smoke most of the time. Again they probably aren't trying to screw you, but they have a job to do and can't personally review everyone's tank every customer.

Case in point, when I was brand new my LFS sold me a blue tang for a 20 long. Told them I was new and my tank was 3 days old. Obviously it died that night. Went back to the store and THE SAME GIRL told me my tank was too small and too new. I rarely go back now except for CUC. If you are in North Houston, I'm talking about fish gallery.

I think you'll find that to be an accurate reflection of real life – not something peculiar. The law of caveat emptor rules for a reason. You walk into a place with stuff to sell, looking for things to buy, they're going to facilitate. That's the basic point of you both being there. :)

The advantage to shopping at the LFS has nothing to do with changing basic rules of life. ;)

What shopping at the LFS does is allow you to see what you're buying beforehand.

If you underestimate the value in that, then whatever you get, you had coming. Caveat emptor.

Shopping online does nothing to help with caveat emptor – you can't see beforehand what you're buying....can't see who works there....can't see neighboring tanks...nothing.

You're 100% at their mercy, not in a better position at all. For a pump or tank decoration, that's probably acceptable. But for wild animals??? There's a better way. (The LFS.)
