I used RS coral pro salt. Tank is about 3 months old with 18 corals and some fish. So out of the bag is comes around 12 dkh. Is stable alk the key or as long as it is higher than 7? I'm kinda confused on that. Also what is the advantages of having that high of alk? Have not started dosing and before I do I want to understand what I'm doing and why.

Stability is number one key in reef keeping. That is great salt but geared more for growth than coloration, the lower the alkalinity the better colors tend to be produced. If you are not trying for accelerated growth then simple IO salt or RS blue bucket might be better suited for your needs. If you are checking calcium and alkalinity be sure to keep an eye on magnesium as it is equally as important.
