It might be interesting to see what the tank pH does while and just after the ATO is active. It's probably not your issue, but ya never know.

at this point, i need to be checking everything. it may be just me panicking and moving things around too much.

Happens. I was terrible to mess with my tank. Now I try my best to leave it alone. Just water changes, filling the ATO barrel, lots of feeding, a little testing, and general cleaning of glass, skimmer cup, and etc. .

If it were my tank I would:
1. Remove GFO.
2. Make sure kalk is being added slowly throughout the day and night.
3. Run alkalinity between 7 and 8 dkH
4. Not add any supplements other than kalk and do 10 % weekly water changes.
5. Check rodi water with hand held tds unit.
