Just read over Elliot's 900 gallon Tank of the Month, and it's incredible! However, it said he had a 180 gallon tank with a ton of fish in it. Just copying and pasting, there were:
  • Large Conspicuous angel - Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus
  • Regal angel - Pygoplites diacanthus
  • Gem tang - Zebrasoma Gemmatum
  • Smaller Bandit angel - Apolemichthys arcuatus
  • Juvenile French angel - Pomacanthus paru
  • Goldflake angel - Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus
  • Multicolor angel - Centropyge multicolor
  • Potter's angel - Centropyge potteri
  • Female Watanabe angel - Geniacanthus watanabe
  • Semilarvatus Butterfly - Chaetodon semilarvatus
  • Red Sea Red Pearl Scale butterfly x3 - Chaetodon xanthurus
  • Wrought Iron butterfly x2 - Chaetodon daedalma
  • Tinker's butterfly x2 - Chaetodon tinkeri
  • Red Sea Racoon butterfly x2 - Chaetodon lunula
  • Burgess butterfly - Chaetodon burgessi
  • Pakistani butterfly - Chaetodon collare
  • Altivelis butterfly - Coradion altivelis
  • Pair of Phantom clowns ‎- Amphiprion ocellaris
  • School of male and female Lyretail anthias - Pseudanthias squamipinnis
  • Earlei wrasse - Cirrhilabrus earlei
  • Pelicieri hawk - Plectranthias pelicieri
  • Panda butterfly - Chaetodon adiergastos
Could all those fish really live in a 180 for life? Or would that just be a growout? What would be the size of the tank they could live in for life? Thanks!

I'm all for overstocking tanks, but that seems like a lot for a 180, even by my standards. Some of the adults of those fish get surprisingly large. Couple that with how 'high end' many of them are, I would be reluctant to keep this combination in a tank 2x's the size.

Yeah, especially the big conspicuous angels that are like 3 or 4 grand - that seems risky to keep anything with one of those in a 180, and I would not want to lose a $3000 fish just because I was lazy. Do you think all of those might fit into a 400 gallon?

Agreed. I would feel a lot more comfortable with a 400 than a 180.

If I could get the money, I'd love to set up a 400 gallon and keep all those fish, but he's got like 8 grand alone into that livestock!

Have you seen that TOTM? He had not a single but 2 peppermint angels! I don't think I would ever want to keep those just because they don't last long and I;d probably screw it up somehow, lol.

Holy crap, even without the wrasse and hawkfish (I couldn't find a price for those, and they'd be nearly impossible to acquire) that guy has a little over $20,000 in livestock!!!!!

I could buy a new car with that money. He's probably got around $35,000 in livestock in all his tanks, excluding corals and the peppermints, and probably $50,000 once you throw in corals. Probably another $50,000 in tanks - sound about right?

Just his fish in at $40,000+, tank, equipment, and installation closer to $100,000.

Wait, who's tank is this? You say Elliott's, but being local and having seen that tank many times, the livestock/setup you describe is not Elliott's.

Whoops, my bad. I'm thinking of a different person - I was trying to say Andrew Sandler's tank :|

X2 my 180 angel tank is pretty overstocked but it's a couple years until I build my new house with two ten foot tanks. They'll have a ten footer for themselves.

In this 180:
Angels:
Emperor adult
Queen adult
King/passer adult
Blueface adult
Rock beauty adult
Potters large
Flame medium

Tangs:
5" yellow belly hippo
4.5" Achilles
4" powder blue

Wrasse:
6.5" banana male
4.5" pink face male
4" red coris adult

Other:
4.25" Moorish Idol
Magnificent Foxface
Sand sifting goby

No angel exceeds 5" with the average being 4.75 or fewer inches. They're growing fast though so I know that won't last.

Believe it or not there's room for one more angel but I am not naive to think adding one more to this group would be anything but stupid... My emperor actually just died it has a tumor so I am in the middle of replacing it. When I do I think I'll add a scribbled angel. I left the emperor above because I'll have one soon again.

They were all added about the same time and vigorously preemptively treated for disease. All fat as whales even the idol. I grossly over feed my fish nori and a healthy mix of frozen foods and blackworms. I also skin for 2-3x tank volume on my three display tanks and even my 55 gal quarantine. This angel 180 in question has a asm g4xx rated for 450+ and an inland aquatics custom turf scrubber 55 gallon or so sump.

I found the article (RK magazine June 2014). It does appear that is his stocking list for a 180 gal tank. His 900 gal display is listed separately. Wish they had included a FTS of the 180! Lots of rare and expensive fish in that guys tanks.

So I am about to pull the trigger on a custom sump/ algae scrubber from Inland Aquatics. What is your candid opinion? It is for a 125 gallon fish only with a basement sump. Would likely run carbon and UV.

I have one of those sumps with scrubber on my angel tank as mentioned and I love it. Highly recommend.
