Jim, what is the approximate depth these guys are found? is the water cooler there than what we keep our tanks? in your opinion, do they need bluer spectrum lighting to maintain their awesome rainbow coloration? pretty much any other input will be appreciated... :)

MarvinsReef,

They are found from 5 ft all the way down to 30 ft. Anything deeper than 30 may live but the colors and growth will be less than healthy. It was winter when I was in Aussie and I was shocked at how cold it was. When I first got to the holding facility I was right into the tanks with my hands and arms. I was so cold I had to take breaks. The acans at this place were under 1 250w MH and it covered about a 10 ft by 6 ft area. They had it up really high. The acans were doing amazing. No die off and no bacteria or infections of any kind. They used real ocean water so I am sure that helped. But, overall I was shocked at how cold the tanks got. I would say at night when I was there it got down to 54f degrees. They didn't have heat either. I was freezing and im sure the corals were as well. These acans can do better in water colder than we are giving them. I asked the divers if they think it ever gets to cold or to hot for the corals. They said the corals just adjusted and its not like they were throwing them from one hot tank to a cool tank. It is a very slow seasonal temperate change. They said it gets very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. Their holding tanks do the same. Ranging from high 60's to high 80's.

My other suppliers was much more North and it was great weather there. 70's just about the whole trip. His tanks were outside in a warehouse with a roof that let the light in. He did have some MH lighting on a few tanks in another sections but that was mainly for the Acros. Aussie has the nicest Acros, Millis, and montis I have ever seen.

Lighting. I am not 100% yet what lighting is best. I find that under T-5 the corals health seems to be much better. They really do like low light and seem to puff up very healthy under the T-5 lighting. I still feel a 20k MH gives the acans the best color but maybe not the best health.

JuniorMC8704,

Your photos are awesome. I really need you to come help me with my pictures. I have a cannon rebel xti and it used to take the best pics. I also have a macro lens. I traveled in aussie with a friend who was a photographer and he messed with my cam so I could take some great night shots. I cant seem to get it adjusted back to where it was with the wb ect. You take some great acan shots. Id give ya a colony or 2 to come help me. Pm me if ya can.

Thanks Jim for the reply... I really appreciate it.... I'm sure others appreciate it as well... maybe in the future I can set up a Aussie lords tank lit by T'5s... :)

here one of my new all time favorites

Sounds good. The one thing i've noticed is that its getting really difficult to find nice rainbows and if you do find them nobody wants to sell them, only trade for equally nice morphs. Thats why i said i'd be willing to trade. Its really hard to put a value on stuff like this since nobody wants to pay what you think there worth. Seems like anytime i get asked how much for something nice and i tell them i never hear back from them again.. :D

How long have you had them Matthew? I'm interesed to see if they morph at all.

I don't have the same bad luck most seem to have as far as morphing goes. Seems to me that if you don't blast them with to much light, and feed them fairly well (i use rods food and PE mysis) that they keep there color and most times get a little nicer even. I'll not really in a hurry to get rid of these though so i'll post some pics in a couple months and we'll see how they look then. I might be sending some off to the Michigan crew if Junior can come up with anything he wants to trade. That way we can see if he has any morphing issues as well. But, from what i can tell, the only thing that morphs these things is to much light.

A few more i took tonight. A couple of them i couldn't quite balance but i did the best i could. Macbooks suck, i can't calibrate my screen for the life of me.

I love the blue on this one!

This is a frag from my very first aussie shipment! Best one that came in.

These are sweet, they have a green skin with orange tentacles.

This one i couldn't quite balance correctly, but its one i got from OIAB. One of my favorites!

A diamond in the rough! This one came in to us and it was solid red with white styrations. I've placed it more in the shade and its developing amazing coloration! Only a few heads but i can't wait for it to grow out!

This one is one of the rare few that has lost a little color. When i got it from Matt at Austin Aqua farms it had a bit of bright yellow in the mouths. That is gone now and i can't quite figure out how to get it to come back. I'm not giving up though! By far the brightest i have. This thing luminates under actinics. I actually have to bump the contrast down or it looks photochopped!
