I have no interest in keeping anemones, but I am wondering if there are other soft corals that clowns like and prefer to host in the absence of anemones?

Im thinking possibly hammer coral or hairy mushroom? Not sure if they would care about these things or if there are other corals they tend to host in without an anemone?

I have one that lives in a patch of Zoas. Not sure you can count on replicating that behavior, I’d never seen it before. Clowns are weird.

Sometimes soft corals can be hurt from hosting clownfish. You could try a duncan or frogspawn if they are large enough.
I have two clownfish that dont even bother my duncan .

omg, how do the zoa stay opened.
I've seen clowns hosting mushrooms, powerheads , LPS

Clowns are dumb. Will host:
Mushrooms
Finger leather
Xenia
Kenyi tree
anemones
Hammer
torch coral

I’ve seen clowns in tanks hosting gsp, hammers, frogspawn, goniopora, alveopora, clams, zoas, mine host a powerhead and a chalice (they’re idiots), nems, toadstools, octospawn, torches, hairy mushrooms, basically anything is good for them apparently. Just make sure that they’re exhibiting hosting behavior before you buy them, otherwise they’re a pain to get to host unless you have a nem.

one of my clowns are nipping at a palythoa. Is that because it is getting ready for hosting.

Not only do they stay open, that patch of zoas has more than doubled in size since the clown started living amongst them. There’s a pretty decent chunk of hair algae growing in there too. That particular zoa is fairly resilient.

Clowns don’t need any host to be happy.
Sometimes they use others, sometimes corners, sometimes heaters, not always nems......on...and....on...
I would not buy a coral for a substitute.
They pick anyways.....

Good to know! Thanks everyone for the info. Just get what I want and they will find the stuff they like best to be happy with.
