I've gone back through some of the articles and didn't find what I was looking for, but I may have missed it.

I'm looking for a one part magnesium supplement to correct magnesium for my pico. I won't be using a lot, so it will more than likely be more cost effective to buy a relatively pure chemical (99.9%+) in a fairly small amount.

What is a good Mg compound that will not slowly raise some undesirable component in the aquarium?

You ideally want a mix of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate. You can purchase both of these from BRS, but if you wish to save a couple bucks, you can purchase the sulfate at your local drug store....Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Simply mix 5 level cups of Magnesium Chloride and 3 level cups of Magnesium Sulfate to a one gallon jug and mix with RO/DI. This combination provides the correct balance. Note, you will get a precipitate that you can add to your tank or decant it off....it doesn't matter.
