Alternatives to LRS Food

I have been using LRS Food for my tank, but where I live, to go buy it, it's 25 miles one way, then 25 miles back. Are there any good alternatives to this food? I live in Northern MD. In my tank, I have two clown fish, a goby, pistol shrimp, and 2 peppermint shrimp. I think it might be best if I were able to just buy something online and have it shipped directly to me.

You can diy frozen

Sure can I made this last batch 13 March 20. Just about out. I have two tanks a 90g and 55g. Since you have a system I would cut in half.

This is my recipe

fish market
24 clams little neck is what I use.
24 muscles
Oysters 1/2 pint package. I find these already shucked is about same price.
Squid depends on size available

Gocery store or fish market
Flounder used half the bag
Shrimp used half the bag (fish market is best)
(Any white sw fish local fish market or grocery store)

Lfs
Fish egg used 5 cubes used
Freeze dried plankton
Blender or food processor blend up to your desired consistency use wax paper on large pan freeze and cut into small pieces. (Thaws fairly quickly)
Left over fish eggs occasionally used as a treat or Hold for next batch.
 
I've read that these guys make great quality food for much cheaper than LRS but unfortunately they won't ship to Texas but believe they will ship to your area. Give them a gander; Mid-Jersey fish food

How much food are you going through? one Package should last a really long time. You are only feeding 3 little fish.

They mainly eat the flakes, and not the frozen stuff. Frozen is for the other inhabitants.

Is OceanNutrition a decent brand to purchase from? They seem readily available nearby.
 
Thanks for being a supporter of LRS Foods. If you are looking for an online source for our foods you can order them from Premium Aquatics. They do a great job packing the foods in dry ice to preserve the quality. Shipping isn't cheap but the cost of the cooler are an added expense. My closest LFS is 45 minutes away so I would love to have one as close as 25 miles. Good luck and thanks again!

DIY will save you a few bucks if the added shipping cost is a bother, although it does not get much better than LRS if you don't mind spending a little extra on the shipping.
 
Honestly just line up a few extra things along the 25 mile journey. That really isn't far if truth be told and you can do a few other things. Stop and get a cup of coffee or cold brew. Lunch. Visit someone. Hit another store that is on that side of the town. Fresh market. Strawberry stand. Set an appointment on that day and get the food on the way back.

Honestly the list goes on and one. It is what I do when things are across the town I just align something else up and Bob's your Uncle.
 
I don't know what the magic sauce is, but every fish I've had has taken to LRS. If you don't have picky eaters, the ocean nutrition will be fine.
 
So I do my own food once a year. Ingredients:
Cod - wild caught
Calamari
Scallops
Mussels
Clams
Mix everything in the blender then add garlic guard, phytoplankton and acropower.
Then freeze into cubes sizes.
Attached is the mix I made last August and still using it.
All of that 2 pound mix would cost no more than $30.

When i used to get Mysis cubes half of it was dirt as i was rinsing it.

I make my own and alternate with lrs to add variety saves a few bucks and I figure the lrs adds anything I might be missing in mine. Lrs gets pricy feeding a 300 gallon wish you could buy it in a gaint batch /combo price

My LFS just closed and I have been getting this for years! I have been worried about going without so thanks for that link. Unfortunately the shipping is steep but it’s worth it for me. By far the best food period

Is the food discounted buying direct?
 
I bought some OceanNutrition food for them - it contains "gel binder". Do I need to rinse the food before putting it into my tank?

The "secret sauce" is the diversity of ingredients and the fact that the fresh seafood we receive twice a week creates a very good feeding response. Many of our LFS partners feed LRS in the store to get new arrivals acclimated faster resulting in less livestock losses.
