Hey guys. I have a diy window frame and screen over my tank. I've noticed that the aluminum is starting to corrode and form pits all over it. Any chance this could be hurting corals? I've had issues with metals killing corals past (elevated tin via triton icp). I remedied that issue but now the corals seem to be showing similar symptoms again. Could it be the lid leeching metals?

I'm probably being paranoid. Any input is appreciated!

I had this same situation with my DIY screen frame corroding. My Corals were suffering. My ICP test showed elevated levels of Zinc... After replacing my aluminum frame, I sent out another ICP test 6 months and 1 year later and levels and corals were back to normal. I'd replace it. D&D jumpguard has a really nice DIY style top.

How long have you had it for?

About two years id say.

Yeah and with my past issues with metals im super paranoid about metals getting near the tank. I'll check them out, thanks!

I just checked them out. They're also aluminum but it looks like they may be powder coated according to the description. And no I didn't paint mine, although I'm considering rebuilding it with something like plasti dip over it.

It's quite possible the D&D can corrode but they appear to have some type of coating. My frame that corroded was from Ace Hardware and looked like bare metal. The other Aluminum frame I had was from Home Depot and did not corrode. I'm currently using Acrylic tops on two of my tanks and a D&D Jumpguard on my Frag tank.

Ive looked and can find nothing but aluminum. If you have a link I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Sounds to me like a brs kit but twice as much

It's the same concept. The one thing that's nice is that the frame itself sits on the glass instead of needing the clips. Looks kinda nice.

I just got an email from their customer service. They claim that it is indeed powder coated for protection.
I’d remove any type of metal that had any signs of corrosion above a reef tank. [emoji3]

Done. Egg crate is living there at the moment.

How do you like the DD Jumpguard top?

I'm really happy with it. It's really nice. Very sturdy and high quality parts and finish. The frame and end pieces have a lip that fits perfect inside a rimmed tank and would also work well for a rimless tank.

How's the powder coat? Think it will hold up against the salt?

Powder coat looks great. Seems like a durable finish. Time will tell but I'm expecting to get at least 5 years without any issues.

Awesome, just ordered it. Thanks a ton!

Did you use the extra cross brace they sell?
