I have a 90 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump I am moving later this week. I plan on doing a huge water change (somewhere around 25%). Only 3 of the fish are coming with the tank. All of the live rock is coming. The return pumps, skimmer, and phosban reactor are coming as well. The one other factor is due to changing stands I am dropping from a 55 gallon sump to a 40 gallon sump.

I am wanting to change the sand bed to either Fiji pink or Oolite live sand. Is this going to cause too big of a cycle to add the fish back right away? I was also thinking about taking some of the current sand in the tank and building a deep sand bed with it in my sump and then adding the live rock that is currently in the sump back to the 40 gallon sump.

If you are using all the previous rock then it shouldn't be a problem...try and save little water as well

It would cause more of a cycle if you used the old sand IMO

I moved my 75g (with 40 gal sump/fuge) a few months ago. Put in a new DSB kept all of my live rock and changed out 30 gals of water.
Did water quality checks everyday and saw no spike/swing at all.
Nothing to worry about...except all of the work ahead of you.
