Am i destroying ATOs?

I have a Tunze ATO, and when it is first powered on, it starts pumping water for 10 to 15 seconds. perhaps that is what the Autoaqua is doing? Try leaving it on for a little bit, it might just be doing its normal start up routine.

Lets leave the DIY unit set aside for and work on the Auto Aqua only. You say you bought it used. Has it ever worked right? Or from day one it’s not worked?
What exact model is it?
How are you using the unit?
Some optical sensors are made to be perpendicular to the water line. While others need to be parallel to the waterline. Are you installing the optical sensor correct?

I've tried leaving them both running. The diy ato is programmed to shut off after 15 seconds of running. Which it does. The Autoaqua ato just runs and runs. Even after the 8 initial beeps and after the water level passes the sensor.

I believe the model I have is the same one. I looked and looked for instructions on this ato and couldn't find a thing. I thought I had it oriented with the plug outlet perpendicular to the water line. Like in the video, but I'll try this again when I get home. You're the 1st one to suggest the sensor orientation so it's a possible solution. It's been several months since I bought the Autoaqua but I'm almost positive that it worked correctly. I do remember testing it after I got the new pump and I'm pretty sure it worked right.
