So I purchased dry rock of someone today; it has been sitting in their shed for 6 or so months. I took it home rinsed it off with tap water and placed it in a tank of salt water, with a heater filter and power head. The next day the water turned brown.

what do I do now?

Looks right, just wait about 4 - 8 weeks for everything to die off. You may want to ensure no light so you're not growing algae - I use brown paper rolls. Change the water when it smells too bad, or get some GAC running. Lots of good info on curing out there using additives/bleach/acid but appreciate using the natural method.
