Hello R2R! I'm new to this hobby. I started with visits to my local fish shop, asking about saltwater tanks. I bought an Aquatop 24g but soon realized I needed better equipment to make it great. Now, my tank has gear that costs more than the tank itself! Did I go too far, or is this typical for beginners like me?

Nah, very easy to do in a small tank. I go with rimmed tanks (from Petco sales) so my equipment costs are WAY more than the tank haha!

Coming from fresh water this was kind of a hard pill to swallow, but when it comes to salt the tank cost is pretty low on the totem pole!

If you’ve got the money and want to spend it, go for it. That being said, I do think you kind of went overboard on equipment for a small tank like that. A lot of that isn’t necessary, but if you enjoy having it and it’s in your budget, then enjoy!

Welcome! Great looking tank. Off to a gorgeous start.

I think as far as equipment goes, you have a few items that are definitely necessities. You have a few nice to haves. And a few things I can probably objectively say yeah, you have a handful of impulse buys. But if they fit your budget and make ya happy? It's fine. Most builds are a bit unique. Do we all start with glowing frag racks? Nah. but they're cool, and if i had the budget, i'd buy some too.

One thing I am going to point out that I'm starting to wish I'd done differently that I notice here: You have a LOT of coral variety. (That's not a bad thing.) BUT. It does mean that your tank is filling quickly, and you don't have a ton of room for future stuff, especially if your coral begins to grow. your relatively new system has a lot to support, too. unless you're very meticulous and very lucky, you may not have 100% success with those corals. And it could be for quite a few reasons. I kinda wish i'd have gone a little slower and really learned what did or didn't work in my tank and why instead of just going in with big bulk purchases at once. now that i'm more selective, i know what each coral is doing and why (usually). MAYBE keep that aspect in mind going forward. watch what does well and what doesn't. in hind sight, i'd have saved a lot more money stabling out smaller buys instead of getting coral crazy and trying everything at once.

That said? sometimes a good deal is a good deal, and a rare piece isn't always available. get an idea of what you want and what works, and stick to that!

This often happens especially when there is a need to improve or upgrade equipment.
