Not to be critical, really! Just wondering what turns people on about reef tanks vs. fish-only with nice decor?

But then again, I'm the guy trying to do FOTs without a sump!

Seriously, am I in the wrong forum to discuss, gain knowledge, contribute on some level? Should I go somewhere else (you have in mind)?

Your fine here.

Watching coral grow and flourish is a main goal. It's very satisfying.

The difference between the two systems is all the inverts (coral, stars, urchins, shrimp, etc) that you get with a reef tank. Once you start adding and growing coral, it is tough to go back to FO systems (trust me, I have thought about it a few times). While this is a reef forum, there is plenty to learn here about fish only systems! Welcome :) :) !!

As a fish/invert only person(currently), I can definitely chime in and say that you're more than welcome here. If it goes in saltwater, we love it(unless its aiptasia). :D

Welcome to R2R and the wonderful folks, information and help.
I have a 58 gal tank that has been running well for almost 2 years now with a canister filter no no skimmer. There are lots of ways to set up your tank. Some just take some adaptation to how to maintain. Like I rinse my filter pads every 2 weeks to reduce the amount of food caught that would need to get broken down (kills the nitrate factory thery most have of canister filters). I ran for about a year FOLW. Now I am just starting to add in some sofites. I think that is as far as I will go with this tank as I feel a sump setup and skimmer will be a better fit for a tank with LPS and SPS. That is in my future for a tank add. Toying with it as an upgrade and move everything or keep it and just start a new 200 + gal tank.
Patience, it is the big word around here, Reefing is patience to cycle, to watch things grow, to keep your tank balanced.
I recommend to everyone joining to create a tank build thread. 1. You get to see where you have started and how much you have grown in this hobby. 2. We love pictures and to see what your doing with your tank. 3. It’s a great learning tool for all of us to see what works and doesn’t . We learn great stuff from each other.
Lastly the only bad question here is the one not asked...

You are very much in the right place. R2R has great information on the health of fish, husbandry, tank equipment, water chemistry and all around awesome people. Welcome

Looks like you are in the right place! We all generally started with FOWLR.

Corals are not just decor but magnificent and complex creatures that are quite fun to grow. Humanity does not know enough about them. I don't care as much for the fish as I used to as the corals are 10x more interesting.

Welcome. :)

Welcome, and as everyone said you are int he right place. You are missing a key point in your assessment of your tank. You have fish only tank currently but it is only a matter of time before you want to get some corals and all other inverts. Before you know it, you will have a full blown reef and will be looking for tank upgrades :D
