Am I making a mistake?

Ok fellow reefers...I want a new sump but I'm limited to the size I can get... The size I am able to fit doesn't have a refugium and I currently do have one... So with me getting a new sump and doing away with the refugium is this a step backwards?

Most refugiums are not very effective if not counter productive.

A well planned, appropriately sized and maintained Refugiums are great but far far from essential.

Well that depends, how big is your Fuge now. For a Fugr to have really be any benefit it needs to be Min. 50% of the Volume of the Display Tank. It also depends what you want it for. If it is for a area where Pods can grow and prosper and help feed some of your Finicky eaters, then a smaller one will have justification. I suggest reading or finding info on this from Julian Sprung.
