So, this summer I have to buy a new tank, and am planning the tank out.
I’m looking to see if people think I have too much planned; I kind of feel that I do. Key points are bolded.
I 'm gonna get a 48X18X18 tank (with 72x16x16 also possible. I’d prefer the 72” tank but I don’t think it’l be as likely). I will have a 30 gallon-ish refugium; I intend to make half of it a “cryptic” fuge and the other half a normal reverse-lit macroalgae fuge.
The plan is to replaciate a small piece of the backreef zone of a reef: a large “wall” and lots of rubble and rocks for various things to live. This will be a peninsula type tank.
Anyway, here’s the livestock list. I feel this is a bit much.
Mobile animals:
Carry-overs:
2 pearly jawfish
1 firefish
1 skunk cleaner shrimp
1 peppermint shrmip
1 BTA - I intend to place this on the top of the wall on the rear side of the tank; and arrange the rock so that the nem has many places to grab hold, has good light, and lots of flow going below it (water aerated and deterring it from moving
2 ocellaris clowns
Additional Mobile Animals I May Get,
Ranked by priority: (fish and coral rankings below are to the same priority scale; i.e. I want fish 1 and coral 1 the most, fish 2 and coral 2, etc.)
- one fairly wrasse, probably lubbocki (1)
- 1-5 royal grammas. (one gramma is priority 1, three is 2, five is 3). I would like the grammas to find their homes in the live rock wall in the left. One gramma’s definite. I would kind of like several in their own small group, with ample places to hide, and have been told 6 or so are OK in a 75 gallon tank, But again, I’m afraid 5 is pushing it
- a second fairy, maybe cyanopleura (3)
- a mandarin, once the tank is well settled (2)
- 2 more jawfish, so again we can have small group, since pearly jawfish are supposedly social if they have enough room (4)
- a tang of some sort if I get the 72” tank (5)
Sessile animals:
Carry-overs:
Pocillopora damicornis - very easy to care for coral, I am told. I know it’s very prolific and hardy in good conditions. I blast this with light and flow, and eventually I hope food.
War Coral/Favites pentagona - I want this to grown in a boulder form and have it in my sandbed
Green Implosion Paly/Palythoa mutuki? Growing reasonably well in my current tank - doubled in size at least since xmas, and there is now a tiny new one.
Purple gorgonian /Pterogorgia anceps - about a month in the tank. I’m also blasting this with light and flow; polyp extension is good.
Additions:
- Tradacnid clam, either maxima or crocea (small ones) (1)
- Gorgonia ventalina - I think this gorgonian is beautiful. If I can find a (legally collected!) frag I would definitely like to have one. I might swap out the pterogorgia for it. (2)
- several decent sized plated montipora colonies of different color (2)
- Rock or coral with christmas tree worms (2)
- Pocillopora Eydouxi - a cooler, IMO, pocillopora species. I probably should have gotten this instead of the damicornis; however this is supposed to be harder to keep. (4)
- sabellid worm (3)
