Am I overly Paranoid?

Empathy for the creatures we have taken responsibility of is a very good sign. Cheers!

I think people, especially reefers!! Lol are paranoid in general. I mean, according to reefers, anything sprayed in the air causes cyano, or their prize coral to die!! I mean geeze, most aerosols are mostly alcohol, so your tank gets a little extra carbon dose this week, so what!

My Wife has this obsession with candles and other scent releasing products.
I forbid her to place any on "my half" of the living room lol (where the tank sits)

I know we have had topics about hair sprays and lotions and things of that nature.
Would candles or other scent releasing items pose any type of threat to a tank?
they are all at least 15+ feet away from it, but i cant help but think about it immediately when i walk into the house and get slammed with a strong fruity smell of some kind.
From what I have read there are safe candles made of beeswax. I had my wife switch to those and it burns in same room no problem. We dont use candles just the wax with a light bulb

Great info and I have experienced this myself. If you are on skimmer or aerator, I would recommend that you get or build a carbon filter for this equipment. Air contaminants are real, and very valid threat for non-WC tank.

I agree, lets prove it. Let me put a reef in my teenage daughters room, if it survives that, myth busted!! Lol
I wouldn't say it's a myth. I believe these products to be bad just It's just not always clear as to what the concentration of said contaminant is/was.

I think that's why I love this hobby so much. So many unknowns, and unproven theories. No clear roadmap for success, everyone has to find what works for them.

All kidding aside, Im guilty, I have tubing ran outside hooked to my skimmer.

I was going to do this when I first set my system, but my neighbor has a old 2 cycle lawn mower that spews
oil fumes! Just don't know what others are spraying, burning.

I bet if you could get the tubing up to roof level it would be good, just a thought.

Hmmm, new variable... Gonna need 3 tanks to test lol ;)

Three concealed jugs, filled with RODI. An aerator on two of them, one without carbon filter. Take a controlled RODI sample and send for triton/icp test. Burn scented candles, spray perfumes, good amount of aerosol mosquito killer, air freshener etc for a month and send all water sample for another test. It will be an eye opener what goes in the water :)

Great idea! Can triton test for chemicals outside of the hobby's elements?

One thing I do know is that contaminants will raise conductivity.

Actually, most air-born , be it sprays, fumes, etc, can and will settle. If they settle in the tank then here come the problems. Your not paranoid, just very cautious. I keep my wife and kids in the loop! Explaining that anything can hurt the tank, so don't do anything, touch anything, look with your eyes, not your hands. They all understand, give me the basement room, aka, man room.

That is a good idea. I'm no chemist by any means but what if some of those chemicals do get some kind of conversion or break down in such a way that could get consumed by certain organisms? Just speculating here. I think 3 proper 10 gallon tanks stocked with LR, coral and fish should provide the reactions that need to be verified.

That is the one million pesos question. There might be more than a handful of contaminants that poses a threat but not being tested on normal icp/triton test.
