My situation:

Currently running a successful 36g with just a few coral frags beginning to grow, two small fish and an bta. A friend just offered to give me a 75g full setup he used as a cichlid tank.

If I move my 35 lbs of live rock over, add 35 lbs of dry rock. Move my 50lbs of live sand over, and run it with the following, do you think it would work?

Reef octopus m1000 hob skimmer, two fluval 250 canister filters, one mp10 vertex and a maxi jet 1200. For lighting I have a 55 3watt led and another 36 w led strip.

Do not have the funds for a sump, upgrade on skimmer or new lighting yet.

Thinking I could run like that, then add sump later as I get the pieces.

Do you think this would work?

Also, any advice on drilling holes for future plumbing but putting some type of cap on them for the time being? I want to drill while the tank is empty obviously.

drill the tank and get bulk head caps. I would think brs has them. This allows you to add on later. Second, you could drill and spout out your plumbing and just gate valve it shut. Then you just finish plumbing when you are ready. As for bioload, you could be okay, two small fish generally don't amount to much waste...depending on how you feed the tank.

Oh, I'm taking it for sure. And in terms of bio load, of course I am planning in adding. A tang for sure and a flame angel and probably some schooling fish. I just feel like such an amateur without the sump. But it will give me a winter project.

What do you think about the skimmer I have handling a 75?

I think you should be fine with that skimmer for now. I would just get a larger model once your corals start to grow out.
