Just picked up 3 of these off amazons black Friday weekend sale, or whatever it is. One for me, one for the wife, and one for my reef.

Can use these for apex, ecosmart live, or any other equipment with web interface like dosers or alkalinity controllers etc. Such a cheap way to fancy up your reef : )

Just thought I'd post this in case people weren't aware.

Happy Reefing!

Yes you can use as display on APEX. Someone posted the video about 2 weeks ago. Purchased one and threw my old crappy one away. Great upgrade.

Personally I would recommend the HD Fire 8 for the better screen and battery life just in case of a power outage it's one less thing to put on battery backup. Also the charging port in the 7 gets wonky after some use I've had to send it in for repair twice in 2 years.

As a display for apex or any reef gear the screen is more than sufficient on the fire 7, we're talking about web interfaces here. Also the battery life is irrelevant for the installs I have in mind as a permanent mounted display, it will be plugged in 24/7. In a power outage I'm not concerned about the tablet being operational, in my install.

Have you had an HD 8 for 2 years and know the charging port issue isn't present as well? I mean they are both ridiculously cheap tablets, so i expect some shortcomings. For 29.99, I'll take my chances lol.

Having said that you can get the HD 8 for 49.99 I think so nothing wrong with that!

I've had the HD 8 for almost 6 months and my "repaired" 7 for 7 almost 8 months and the cords that don't work in the 7 because they are to loose work in the 8 no problem. I was just giving my recommendation for an extra 20 bucks you get a newer cpu (albeit the same clock of 1.3) better ram and a true HD screen. plus my experience with the 2 tablets I feel the 8 has a much better and sturdier build quality.

You too I'd like to see your build with them, I might be stealing my son's tablet [emoji48]. Or just wait for the next sale I think he would prefer that.

Unfortunately I am nothing like @mdbannister when it comes to outward aesthetics of my reef/equipment. Check out his build if you havent.

I try to make every piece of equipment as easy to access/maintain/replace as possible, and if I can make it look half way decent along the way, I'll try n do that as well.

In my case I'll simply be putting my alkatronic unit on top of my equipment cabinet and placing the tablet on a stand plugged in next to it. That way I can view the data at a glance and access the interface without pulling it up on a computer or small phone screen. I will def post pics once it's set up (alkatronic pre-orders don't ship until late December), but don't get too excited ; )

N yea, I'm pretty sure your son would prefer the latter........
