If you were to dose one or the other, which would you choose? Is there any upside over one from the other? Will a reef tank benefit more from live phyto vs amino acids? Does anyone dose both?

I don't believe the terms "dose" should be used. I think "feed" is more correct.

What organisms do you want to feed? Is nitrate very low?[/QUOTE]

I have a 220 with a Mandarin so I have a great pod population in there for him, thus feeding live phyto. But was wondering if there was also a need/benefit to dosing AA once a week as well. I dont have a test kit to measure low levels of nitrates but with a standard API I get 0, go figure. The tank is very happy and healthy with LPS and SPS growing at a beautiful rate. This is something I noticed more since starting a low daily dosage of the phytoplankton, adding 15ml a day.

Folks with very low nitrate can get good results with amino acids for corals that are apparently being starved for a source of N. In other cases the benefit is less clear.

But it is easy enough to dose some and see if you note any improvement. :)

I run a low nutrient tank but not 0 and I dose both. Live Phytoplankton every night and Reef Roids/ Polyp Booster twice a week.
