Very interesting. I never really saw the value in a pH test kit vs. probe. I believe I experienced a recent rapid growth of bacteria dropping my pH quickly which has recovered since then.

If you have the cap on, wouldnt that make the bacteria inside anerobic and not aerobic? Thus your testing for denitrators? Im not sure if this is a good way to feel safe about ammonia tank cycle, but is interesting for sure.

No aerobic bacteria don't become anaerobic. What happens is the anaerobic bacteria die and are replaced by aerobic bacteria. They are a different species. However, what Twilliard is measuring is the CO2 released by the dying bacteria. When aerobic bacteria are suddenly exposed to anaerobic conditions they will die.

There are in fact bacteria that will switch from aerobic to anaerobic as the needs arise. These are called faculative aenerobes. Some prefer one state over the other but can switch.
In fact its thought that the bacteria we mainly drive with carbon dosing with things like vinegar, vodka, biopellets, etc are mainly faculative anaerobes. As they layer on each other the lower/inner layers become anaerobic and they switch. They don't require the deep rocks or sandbeds to provide the low oxygen regions.
