Ammonia Levels

Hey guys,

I’m cycling a new tank and have had scallops rotting in my filter sock for about a week now, trying to get the ammonia level to rise. I still haven’t seen any ammonia while testing my parameters. How long should it take before I see my first spike?

Are you using all dry rocks or live rocks

What about wet pack sand, trying to find what's oxidizing ammonia

I used 80 pounds of dry rock and 60 pounds of live sand. This is a 65 gallon setup.

The sand is likely oxidizing any ammonia that you might be putting in but that's okay because given about 15 or 20 days all the other surfaces are going to be caught up in any way merely by being associated underwater no matter what you add or don't add to it at this point
