Is there anything I can do to reverse the effects of ammonia poisoning? I have a trigger in QT who was doing well for almost 3 months while I was waiting on another fish to introduce him with. Unfortunately, things got in the way of some regular maintenance and today I noticed he was struggling with what appear to be symptoms of ammonia poisoning. Sure enough, I tested the water with a salifert fit and it coloured green not yellow. I removed him immediately into a separate QT tank with cleaner water but while he is breathing OK he is laying on the bottom (upright) with red bruising on his side. is there anything else I can do to help him recover?

Thanks very much, but unfortunately I don't have any methylene blue on hand. I do have malachite green but it's recently expired. I also have a bottle of melafix which is advertised as a treatment for damaged fins, ulcers and open wounds. Any idea if this woudl work?

Melafix's active ingredient is cajeput oil and there is no evidence to suggest that it would be effective in reversing ammonia poisoning. Methylene blue is the only chemical (to my knowledge) known to help with this.
