Ammonia spike, coral closed, dying?

Tank 13.5 EVO with protein skimmer

Ammonia 0.25

I did a water change with treated water, only about a gallon. Roughly 10%. I noticed that my newer Kenya tree started to go sorta limp. It wasn’t fully opened yet but in the process. I immediately tested Ammonia and it was 0.25. I took out roughly two gallons of water for an emergency change. I tested the new water going into the tank and it read 0. The Kenya tree is entirely closed now. Small male clown is breathing heavy

I haven’t seen a change in ammonia levels. Is Kenya tree dying? Should I remove asap? I also have Zoa that closed now

Tested new water as in new salt water or new rodi water (assuming you use rodi)? You shouldn't have any ammonia in the tank regardless unless something big died. Have you retested it or tried it twice?
 
You may have a false reading especially if youre using API test kit. Going limp with kenyii suggests lack of light, water flow or both. Look at your nitrate and phosphate levels which would more have coral impact

I am using an API test kit. I’ve used this exact kit in the past and haven’t had any issues.

I tested the new salt water. Nothing that I’m aware of died. The hermits are still alive and all fish.

Your probably absolutely fine.
Our hobby test kits measure total amonia nh3 + nh4. It is the free amonia nh3 that is harmful. The higher the temperature and ph the more free amonia there will be in the water. Api is notorious for false readings of amonia.

Assuming a normal range of around 77 degrees and a ph around 8.1 and salinity 35ppt gives you about .0141ppm of free amonia.

NH3 level
safe 0.001 0.020 ppm
alert 0.020 0.050 ppm

This assumes the api actually measured any amonia.

What do you mean by "treated water"?

I usually add a half dose of maintenance dose of Seachem Pristine.
If I’m being completely honest I think I was just being dramatic. I think everybody was a little shocked by the initial water change. All the fish are acting normal. The zoa’s haven’t opened but the Kenya tree is not as shrunk as it was. It was almost a perfect little round ball but it’s picking up now

Not looking much better today. Just stress or dying? I tested the ammonia again just now and it’s reading 0. Fish are happy and eating
