Now the nitrate has spiked.

Nitrite messes with the nitrate test, ignore it until nitrite is zero.

Suggestions about algae, or something else?

Yes the algae, seems to be slowly taking over the liverock and sand. 6 months ago I had little to no algae. I think the tank looks way better without algae.
