I have had to start an emergency QT tank.

The clowns are active but they aren't eating. I tested the water and results show an undesirable spike in ammonia.

The water was transferred from the DT, so there will be some sort of bacteria there. I placed only 2 very small live rock in there to help with bacteria growth. I also purchased some matrix ti place in the filter, although I think is not enough. Could the lack of biomedia be the cause in spike in ammonia? If I were to purchase more biomedia will it help with ammonia? This is what I plan to purchase:
What would be best practice while the clowns are already in the QT. Should I soak it for a couple of hours (with the water from the QT, but placed in a bucket) before putting them into the running filter?

I also plan to buy some Seachem Prime today, will this be safe to add into the QT while the clowns are in there?

I've been doing regular water changes of 25%, but due to the major increase in ammonia the past few days I have been changing 20% daily (past 2 days). I understand this can be stressful on the clowns, but is it all that bad due to the ammonia? I was considering doing a minor water change again just to dilute the ammonia. As I read somewhere here, the solution to pollution, is dilution.

Get some water changes done to dilute the ammonia to safe levels, be sure temp and salinity match so you're not stressing the fish further.

Was your filter media in the QT seeded or brand new?

Matrix - brand new (will possibly need more)
Crushed live rock - seeded (brought over from DT in the sump (very few pieces, maybe not enough)

I plan to do water change today (again!), and this would be the 3rd consecutive day I have done a 25% water change.

From my understanding I will probably need more biomedia to help with the ammonia.

Biomedia needs a long period to accumulate enough nitrifying bacteria (4 weeks usually) it's worth getting a bacteria in a bottle to try and boost this.
Live rock will likely absorb treatments you add so it's not always advisable
